CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Jilly read her shopping list out loud on the way back to the farm. Keats mumbled an objection about stopping at the grocery store at a time like this, but we’d promised to help. It was a condition of our chef going with us to see Ronan and Gemini. There were a lot of mouths to feed and more coming.

When my phone buzzed, he gave a mumble of relief.

When Jilly’s buzzed, that turned into a pant-laugh.

And when our phones buzzed another half dozen times apiece, he threw back his head and yipped for the sheer joy of it.

A Butter Tart 911 outranked grocery shopping and just about anything else, short of an emergency hospital stay.

“Uh-oh,” Jilly said, as I made a U-turn and headed back towards Daisy’s house. “We’re going to have some hungry guests.”

When my family gathered for a meeting like this, there were bigger problems to worry about. “No one at Runaway Inn ever starves, Jilly. Maybe my grandparents can run into town.”

That wasn’t an option, as it turned out, because my grandfather’s white head loomed over the refrigerator, where he was sharing Asher’s customary spot with my weary-looking brother. Gardenia was sitting at the kitchen table surrounded by Poppy, Iris and Violet. Mom, of course, was on her stool at the counter, planting waxy lipstick prints in her signature red on a white mug. The fact that Daisy had forgotten to use the patterned china designated for Mom’s use was a key indicator of my clean freak sister’s state of mind.

“Who’s overseeing the guests?” I asked, as Keats pranced ahead of us into the kitchen. Percy had already departed to track down my nephews’ ferrets.

Daisy pumped her spray bottle of vinegar cleanser at the counter and scrubbed the already-gleaming surface with a shammy. “Mom said Kellan took care of it.”

My eyes darted suspiciously to my brother and he managed a wink. “Are you serious? Travis Wigg is in my home like he owns it?”

“He’s been in the house before, Ivy.” Poppy’s voice was grating. “Kellan wouldn’t put him in charge if he didn’t trust him, would he?”

“Now, now darlings,” Mom purred, smoothing her red satin skirt. “No one likes a shrew.”

Poppy set her mug down with a deliberate clatter. “Ivy’s got a problem with Travis and I don’t understand it. If Kellan likes him, isn’t that enough?”

I leaned on the end of the counter since Jilly had taken the last seat at the table. “Kellan and I don’t agree on everyone.”

“True that,” Asher said. “Edna Evans for starters. He doesn’t trust her, but he does trust Travis. Is your marriage in peril before it’s even official?”

“Ash, stop.” Jilly’s tone left no room for dispute. “Why are we here when a rowdy young band is performing to an audience of one? I hope Travis likes searing guitar solos.”

“He does,” Poppy muttered. “We love live music.”

I raised my hand. “I know why we’re here. To do an intervention to save Poppy from a grave mistake.”

My sister started to stand but Gardenia pushed her down.
